CLASSIC LASAGNE

Preparation Method :

  • Preheat oven to moderate 180°C.
  • Brush a shallow oblong ovenproof dish (approximately 24 x 30 cm) with melted butter or oil. Line with lasagne sheets, breaking them to fill any gaps. Set aside.
  • To make Cheese Sauce : Melt butter in a medium pan. Add flour and stir for 1 minute. Remove from heat. Gradually add milk, stirring until mixture is smooth.
  • Return to heat. Cook, stirring constantly, over medium heat until sauce boils and thickens. Reduce heat, simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Remove from heat, add cheese, salt and pepper; stir until well combined. Set aside.
  • To make Meat Sauce : Heat oil in a large pan. Add onion and garlic and stir over low heat until onion is tender.
  • Add mince. Brown well, breaking up with a fork as it cooks. Stir in undrained, crushed tomatoes, wine, oregano, basil, salt and pepper. Bring to boil. Reduce heat; simmer 20-25 minutes.
  • Spoon one-third of the meat sauce over lasagne sheets. Top with one-third of the cheese sauce.
  • Arrange layer of lasagne sheets over top. Continue layering, finishing with lasagne sheets. Sprinkle with combined mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
  • Pour cream over the top. Sprinkle with parmesan. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until bubbling and golden.

INGREDIENTS

  • 250 grams packet instant lasagne sheets 
  • 100 grams freshly grated mozzarella cheese 
  • 100 grams freshly grated cheddar cheese 
  • 125 ml thickened or pouring cream 
  • 50 grams freshly grated parmesan cheese

Cheese Sauce

  • 60 grams butter or margarine 
  • 75 grams plain flour 
  • 450 ml milk
  • 200 grams freshly grated cheddar cheese
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Meat Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon Cooking oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed 
  • 500 grams beef mince
  • 850 grams cans tomatoes 
  • 50 ml red wine
  • ½ teaspoon ground oregano 
  • ¼ teaspoon ground basil 
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
