In India, people celebrated numerous festivals and one of them
is the so-called Pongal. The Pongal is generally commemorated by
the Tamil Nadu people and this celebration can also be seen at the
southern part of the country. The Pongal festival is known to be
the harvest festival and includes thanksgiving to the god of sun
and earth for their unlimited blessings. To fully understand the
Pongal celebrations, you can simply read this article to gather
more information.
There is a Tamil maxim that "Thai Piranthal Vazhi Pirakkum", means
that the month dawn of Thai, peace, prosperity, harmony, brightness
and happiness for everyone is fully achieved.
Based from the mythology of Hindu, the Pongal celebration
started when the god emerges after six months long. For almost
three days, the festival begun to spread and it is said to be the
most fervently and significant harvest festival celebrated in South
India. On the first day of Pongal, a unique puja is being performed
before paddy cutting. Basically, every farmer worships the earth
and sun through anointing their sickles and ploughs with sandal
wood stick. These are the blessed tools that can be used in cutting
the newly produced rice.
For the preparation of the festival, the hindus mainly draw Kolam
at the entrance of the home. Kolam is the decorative pattern
consisting of rice flour typically drawn on their floor and it
symbolizes to welcome their guests. The Kolam's center point is the
cowdung lump which normally holds the five-petaled flower. This
flower is a sign of fertility and love offering to the leading
deity.
In this festival, every three days are accompanied with distinct festivities. The first day of Pongal is known as Bhogi Pongal and it is exclusively for the family. The Bhogi Pongal is usually intended for domestic activities and being united with the members of the family. This is first celebrated in respect to the Lord Indran, a supreme clouds ruler that provides rains for their plants. The second Pongal day, Surya Pongal, is mainly dedicated to devoting the Sun of god named Surya. Pongal made of Jaggery and raw rice are usually offered to their god as a sign of love and respect. The Pongal is the most essential day for the whole festival wherein prayers are being offered to Sun God. During this day, the Sun is totally given an excellent significance and that's the reason why it is known as Surya Pongal. The final day of the pongal festival is Mattu Pongal. That is meant for the cattle worship. The cattle are well-bathed; their horns are shined and painted with bright colors; and they also placed some garlands around their necks. All things offered to gods are also given to birds and cattle to eat.
The Pongal's forth celebration is a period of peace, happiness and abundance. It is embraced to honor the sun god for their bountiful harvest. In addition, families also gather to share and rejoice their harvests and joy to other people. the festival. For the celebration, the entire family wear new sets
of clothes. It is believed that the pongal festival will bring
goodness and wealth to their houses. During this celebration,
people usually go out for shopping, sightseeing, and exchanging
jestings with their friends and relatives. The farmers, on the
other hand, are generally loaded with money because of the sale of
the harvested items.
In the middle of the celebration and cheer, the cynosure of the
activity in the southern city of south india called Madurai, is the
conventional valor sports known as jallikattu or bull-fight. The
youth valor goes on several tests at the jallikattu. The main
objective of the sport is to extract the bounty wherein they need
to put clothes and tied the bull's horns. Contrasting to Spain, the
matador doesn't need to kill the animal.
The Pongal celebration is extremely fun and exciting. Aside from the sports and amusing activities, people also united to worship their gods and peaceful community arises. The Pongal is mainly celebrated all over India. However, it has different names such as Biju and Sankranthi. In this celebration, People have a chance to thank their god for an abundant harvest.
