IRISH SODA BREAD

Irish Soda Bread is cherished by many people because it’s fully loaded with milk, flour, baking soda, tartar, yoghurt, butter or margarine and salt! Prepare for four small loaves of bread so as to accommodate the entire family members and friends!
Makes :
4 Small Loaves

Preparation Time :
30 minutes

Cooking Time :
10 minutes

Preparation Method :

  • Thoroughly grease a plate. Mix together the skimmed milk and plain yoghurt and milk.
  • Tip the wholemeal flour into a bowl and sift in the plain flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt. Rub finely.
  • Add the liquid and stir to a soft dough. Knead quickly until smooth. Shape into a round. Transfer to the centre of the plate.
  • Cut a deep cross on the top, then dust lightly with flour. Cover loosely with kitchen paper and cook on Full for 8 minutes.
  • The bread will rise and spread. Allow to stand for 12 minutes. Lift off the plate and place on a wire rack.
  • Divide into four portions when cold. Bread is best eaten fresh.

INGREDIENTS

  • 5 tablespoons full-cream milk 
  • 300 grams wholemeal flour
  • 150 grams all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons each, skimmed milk and plain yoghurt 
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda 
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar 
  • 1¼ teaspoon salt
  • 50 grams butter or margarine
