Peel, core, and cut the apple into very thin slices. Remove crusts, then place bread, buttered side down, in a shallow casserole and sprinkle with half the brown sugar.
Arrange apple slices on top and sprinkle with the rest of the brown sugar. Dot with the butter.
Cover the dish with buttered foil and cook in a preheated moderately hot oven (190°C / 375°F, Gas Mark 5) for 25 to 30 minutes, until the bread is crisp and the apples soft.
Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon, and serve with pouring cream.

- 2 apples
- 4 slices well-buttered bread
- 80 gram brown sugar
- 50 gram butter
- Caster sugar and ground cinnamon, mixed, to serve
