SAVOURY CHELSEA BUNS

Preparation Method :

  • Mix the flour, salt and sugar in a bowl and rub in the oil. Warm the milk and water until body temperature.
  • In a cup, mix the yeast with a little of the warm liquid to make it smooth, add to the flour and knead into a dough with the remaining liquid. The more you knead the better the buns will be.
  • Place the dough in a bowl, cover it with a large polythene bag and leave it in a warm place to rise until double in bulk, 1 - 3 hours.
  • Knead the dough for few minutes. Roll out into a rectangle.
  • Mix the filling ingredients, spread over the dough; brush one edge with water. Roll up like a Swiss roll and cut into 5 slices with a floured knife.
  • Lay the slices in a greased and floured square baking tin with a gap between each. Brush with beaten egg.
  • Allow the slices to rise for about 15-20 minutes. They will now be almost touching.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C / 400°F for 45 minutes. As they rise further they will merge into each other by forming one large square. Cool slightly and serve.

INGREDIENTS

For the buns

  • 400 grams flour
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 1½ tablespoon powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 150 ml milk and water, mixed
  • 1 tablespoon fresh yeast 
  • 1 egg, beaten, to glaze

For the filling

  • 300 grams cooked spicy minced meat
  • 150 grams peas, cooked
  • 150 ml tomato puree 
  • salt and pepper to taste
