Preparation Method :
- Heat the oil in a non-stick saucepan. Add the cumin and onion, sauté for about 2-3 minutes or until just coloured.
- Add the chili and ginger, followed by the rice, lentils, water, spices, salt and pepper. Bring to the boil for about 2 minutes.
- Simmer to low flame, cover and cook for about 20-25 minutes or until the rice and lentils are tender.
- Remove the lid and cook until the rice has a thick porridge-like consistency, mashing some of the rice and lentils with the back of a spoon.
- Stir in the lemon juice, adjust the seasoning, and serve hot.
INGREDIENTS
- 500 ml hot water
- 25 grams lentils, cleaned, rinsed, soaked and drained
- 1 teaspoon Cooking oil
- ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
- 25 grams brown rice, washed, soaked and drained
- ½ small onion, sliced
- 1 green chilli, left whole
- ¼ inch peeled fresh ginger
- A pinch of turmeric powder
- ¼ teaspoon garam masala
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Lemon juice, to taste
