Preparation Method :
- Pressure-cook the rice and set aside to cool.
- The Spice Paste: Heat the oil and fry all the ingredients for the spice paste. Grind to fine paste, adding the tamarind.
- Heat 50 ml of oil and add all the ingredients for tempering. When the mustard seeds splutter, add the green peas, potatoes, aubergines and capsicum.
- Cook on low heat till the vegetables are done, add water if necessary.
- Stir in the spice paste, turmeric powder and salt. Fry for a minute.
- Add the rice and stir gently till well blended.
- Serve hot with fried appalams.
INGREDIENTS
- 150 grams shelled green peas
- 50 grams potato, peeled and chopped fine
- 75 grams aubergines, chopped fine
- 150 grams long-grained rice
- A marble-sized tamarind ball
- 1 capsicum, chopped fine
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
Spice Paste
- 3 tablespoon Bengal gram dal
- 1 tablespoon Cooking oil
- 3 tablespoon coriander seeds
- 2 tablespoon black gram dal
- ½ teaspoon asafoetida powder
- 6 red chillies
Tempering
- 3 tablespoon Cooking oil
- 2 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon black gram dal
- 1 teaspoon Bengal gram dal
- 1 dry red chilli, halved
- A few curry leaves
