CHAPATI

Serves :
4

Preparation Time :
15 minutes

Cooking Time :
15 minutes

Preparation Method :

  • Sieve the flour into a deep bowl. Add the salt and water and mix together to form a soft dough.
  • Gather the dough from the sides of the bowl and knead until it is pliable, using the back of your fist. Cover and leave to stand for about 10 minutes. Divide into 8 pieces. Make each piece into a ball by roll it between the palms of your hands.
  • Dust each ball with flour to prevent the dough sticking and roll out to form a circle.
  • Heat the thawa to a very high temperature and place a chapati on it.
  • Wait for about 10-15 seconds and turn the chapati over, pressing down with the cloth and move the chapati around the thawa.
  • Turn the chapati over again and repeat by moving the chapati around the thawa.
  • After making sure that all the chapati and its edges are cooked, remove from the thawa. Repeat with the other chapati.
  • Like all Indian breads, it is best served as soon as possible after making. As they are cooked keep them warm, covered in foil, piled on top of each other.
  • Brush each chapati with a little butter if desired, to help keep them moist.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 400 grams wholemeal flour (atta)
  • 320 ml water
