SAADHI DHAAL

Preparation Time :

Cooking Time :
40 minutes

Preparation Method :

  • Place all the dhaal ingredients, except the salt, in a saucepan with 500ml water and cook over a medium heat for 20 minutes or until lentils are soft enough to be mashed.
  • Add the salt and 200ml water, return to the heat and bring to the boil. Turn off the heat.
  • To make the baghaar : Heat butter and oil together, add onion, mustard and onion seeds with curry leaves and fry until golden brown. Pour over the lentils and serve.

INGREDIENTS

  • 150 grams masoor dhaal 
  • 150 grams chana dhaal (Pick over and wash the lentils)
  • 1 teaspoon diced and crushed ginger root 
  • 1 teaspoon crushed garlic 
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric 
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh coriander 
  • 1.5 litre water 
  • 1½ teaspoons salt

Baghaar 

  • 1 tablespoon butter and Cooking oil
  • 1 medium onion, peeled and sliced
  • ½ tablespoon mixed mustard and onion seeds 
  • 3 whole fresh or dried curry leaves
